Thursday, October 26, 2006 My darling one, I have a job now as a overseer on a cotton plantation, and a little house for us, so please come on the very next boat and don't delay. The plantation is owned by Mr James Donnelly, another Irishman from Connemara, it's about thirty miles from Charleston, and the most beautiful place you ever saw. Mrs Donnelly has an aunt in the town, and you can stay with her until we can be married which I hope will be just as soon as possible after your arrival. The house is the gate house for the plantation, it's small and bare, but I know you will soon make it a real home for us.You might think it strange knowing my opinion of slavery that I took a job on a plantation, but since being here in the South, some of my views that came from ignorance have altered. Mr Donnelly has some thirty slaves, but I assure you he treats them well. But you will see all this for yourself very soon. Write to me as soon as you've booked your passage. I shall be waiting at the dock for the boat to come in, and counting every hour unti I can hold you in my arms. I have so much to tell you and show you. Our life together is going to be wonderful, you'll see. |
